Africa continues to face significant health system challenges, including persistent disease burdens, fragmented health information systems, limited use of evidence in decision-making, inequitable access to healthcare, and emerging threats such as pandemics, climate-sensitive diseases, and rapid demographic transitions. Although substantial investments have been made in health research and digital health innovations, the translation of data and evidence into policy and practice remains inadequate.
The African Health Informatics Research Institute (AfHIRI) runs the AfHIRI Data Center Data Center for Health Intelligence and Analytics, dedicated to advancing evidence-informed decision-making through data science, health informatics, policy analysis, implementation research, artificial intelligence, and knowledge translation. The Center is a strategic platform for integrating diverse health data sources, generating actionable evidence, supporting health policy development, strengthening health systems research capacity, and promoting data-driven governance across Africa. Through evidence synthesis, data analytics, policy intelligence, and collaborative partnerships, the Center will contribute to improving health outcomes, strengthening health system resilience, and accelerating progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Background and Rationale
African countries are generating unprecedented volumes of health data through routine health information systems, electronic medical records, disease surveillance systems, demographic surveys, digital health platforms, implementation research, and administrative databases. However, much of this data remains underutilized due to fragmented systems, limited analytical capacity, inadequate interoperability, and weak linkages between researchers and policymakers. Policy decisions are often made without timely access to reliable evidence, resulting in inefficiencies, suboptimal resource allocation, and missed opportunities for improving population health outcomes.
Furthermore, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, and digital health technologies presents both opportunities and challenges for African health systems. Harnessing these innovations requires dedicated institutions capable of generating evidence, informing policy, ensuring ethical governance, and supporting responsible implementation. The AfHIRI Data Center for Health Intelligence and Analytics seeks to address these gaps by creating a multidisciplinary platform that transforms data into actionable knowledge for policymakers, healthcare providers, researchers, development partners, and communities.

Approach
We transform raw data, secondary data, reports into powerful insights. We use data harmonization tools for quality assurance and cleaning to make health data more accessible and useful for research by working with data owners and legal custodians to create and implement data pipelines for mapping diverse datasets to conform to global data standards. We follow the IdSyDD framework to identify the data source, appropriate data sets, data harmonization, synthesize it through analytics, document it through report and manuscript writing, country report profiles and policy briefs and then disseminate through presentation in webinars and conferences
