
Dr. Fred Kaggwa
Dr. Fred Kaggwa is the Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics and a Senior Lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda. He holds a PhD in Computing and has extensive experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, and quality assurance in higher education
Dr. Kaggwa is recognized for his contributions to data science, cybersecurity, digital health, artificial intelligence, and implementation science in Africa. His research interests include data science for healthcare, artificial intelligence in global health, computer and network security, biometrics, big data security, and the ethical dimensions of computing technologies. Dr. Kaggwa has contributed to initiatives such as the MUST Data Science Research Hub (MUDSReH), supported through the NIH DS-I Africa program, which focuses on advancing data science and implementation science for healthcare innovation in Africa.
He is also involved in research exploring large language models for maternal and postpartum healthcare in local African languages. Beyond research, Dr. Kaggwa has played a key role in curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, and institutional quality assurance at MUST. He has mentored numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students and actively supports the development of data science and computing research communities within Uganda and beyond.
Within the AFHIRI Doctoral Research Progress Forum, Dr. Kaggwa contributes expertise in digital health innovation, data science, cybersecurity, and implementation science. His mentorship supports doctoral researchers in research design, scientific communication, digital innovation, and translating research into impactful healthcare interventions. His leadership continues to strengthen interdisciplinary digital health research and capacity building across Africa.
